When it comes to our hometown of Erlangen, we go into raptures and it's hard to narrow down the number of favourites. As we can see, our guests don't always have much time, so here are our top 3.
The discovery tour starts right on our doorstep. Via Schiffstraße, which is also known as the most beautiful street in Erlangen. With its small cafés, shops and restaurants, it has a special charm. A popular meeting place for young and old with a French background - whether for picnicking, strolling or relaxing - there is something for everyone here.
Erlangen is known for its large university, its many top clinics and above all for Siemens. Historically, however, Erlangen is even more interesting, because in the 16th century the city took in Huguenot refugees, who shaped the cityscape and its history. So we also have French roots in Erlangen. It is not only because of this part of the city's history that our Erlangen motto is ‘Open by tradition’. Schiffstraße leads directly from our hotel into the palace gardens. If you don't let the many shops and cafés stop you, you can quickly reach the beautiful Orangery and on to the Botanical Gardens.
Picturesque rivers like the Wiesent, the Walberla, a popular hiking destination and viewpoint, as well as steep limestone rock formations reaching high into the sky, shape the landscape of Franconian Switzerland. For children, adventurers, and nature lovers, caves such as the Devil’s Cave (Teufelshöhle) and Neideck Castle (Burg Neideck) are especially popular excursion destinations. Many small breweries and inns provide delicious food and drink along the way.
At the end of the day, this beautiful nature outing is just a 30-minute train ride from Erlangen towards Forchheim. Click here to learn more.
Popular destinations in Franconian Switzerland:
One of our absolute favorite spots, and just a stone’s throw away—not only because of the Erlangen Bergkirchweih festival. Right in the middle of it all is a true hidden gem: the Sculpture Garden. Probably one of the most untouched park areas in the region.
The Erlangen Burgberg is a true all-rounder. In the past, it served as a refrigerator for brewers. Today, it provides Erlangen locals and their guests with a destination for dining and relaxation. The Sculpture Garden, offering a beautiful view over the city, is a place for art and creativity. Nearby lies Erlangen’s villa district.
On the southern slope, Erlangen’s most famous folk festival, the Bergkirchweih, came to life. Refreshments are provided by a brew master at Entla’s Keller with his homemade beer. In the beer garden, young and old sit together at the same table. Good beer, Franconian cuisine, often live music, and the shade of old trees create the charming beer garden atmosphere.
